Junior Deck Officers (having completed certificate of competency as navigating deck officer)

This course is to provide practical knowledge to navigating watch keeping officers on the application of Collision Avoidance Regulations, to effectively manoeuvre a vessel in heavy traffic areas and prevent close quarter situations and collisions. The navigating officer shall gain confidence in keeping independent bridge watches.

The course covers the STCW requirements of Section A-II/1 for simulator training for Navigation at Operational level, Section A-VIII/2 and Guidance given in B-VIII/2 for Navigation and Watch keeping at the Operational level using the principles of Bridge Resource Management as given in Section A-II/1.

The course takes into account topics from IMO Model Course 1.22 dealing with ship’s manoeuvring characteristics and Bridge Resource Management at the operational level.

1. Ship Manoeuvering Characteristics.
2. Passage Planning.
3. Bridge watchkeeping in open sea, coastal areas, Traffic separation schemes and pilotage waters.
4. Application of International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 as amended.
5. Use of Navigational Equipment for Collision Avoidance & Passage Monitoring.
6. Response to Navigational equipment failure Emergencies.
7. Anchoring methods and limitations of the Anchoring equipment.
8. Principles of Bridge Team and Resource Management and its practical application.
